Sharif bagged the first hat-trick of this season’s Dhaka Premier
Division Cricket League at the SBNCS against Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club
to give his team the advantage on a rain delayed match. Sheikh Jamal
Dhanmondi Club managed 168-9 in an over-curtailed innings and the D/L
target for Gazi Group Cricketers stood out to be 196 in the 38 available
overs.
Being invited to bat first on a cloudy morning at Mirpur, Sheikh Jamal made a decent enough start to the game. Joyraz batted slowly, but helped Abdullah Al Mamun in setting up the 62-run opening stand. Abdullah later was dismissed for 69, and rain soon poured down to add a two and half hour delay.
After the restart, Sheikh Jamal looked to add quick runs, but Mohammad Sharif came back to bowl a fantastic return spell and spill water on the hopes of Sheikh Jamal players in putting up a good score on board. Sharif bowled an eventful 34th over, starting off giving away a single.
He dismissed Mahmudullah third ball, as the Sheikh Jamal skipper looked to clear deep mid-wicket only to get caught. Then Zabid fell next ball, trying to scoop a stump-line delivery over to fine leg, only to see his leg stump uprooted. Nazmus Sadat was to face the hat-trick ball and he was out, LBW. Mohammad Sharif was overjoyed in the middle of the pitch picking up the hat-trick. The next ball saw another fall of wicket, a fourth in the over, off consecutive deliveries.
Muktar Ali was run out, as the ball was hit straight, and Sharif had a finger to it as it disturbed the stumps at the non-striking end on its way. Unfortunate dismissal brought an end to the eventful over of Mohammad Sharif-1 run and 4 wickets! Sharif went on to take another wicket in his last over, ending with bowling figures of 8-0-43-4.
The chase was going on smoothly and aggressively, until Arafat Sunny came in to bowl his maiden first over, with the wicket of Shamsur Rahman in it. He clinched another wicket, before play was put to a halt for the day on another rain-shower. Gazi Group Cricketers are in a comfortable position to win the match, with 83-3 on board from 16.1 overs. They will need another 113 runs to win it from 21.5 overs as the rest of the play moves to the reserve day on the 19th.
