Mohammedan pick up 8-wicket win over Abahani

Shubhashis Roy gave the early blow, dismissed Tamim Iqbal in the first over for 4 runs only. And the fall of their skipper disallowed them to stand up tall to put a heavy target on board. Being invited to bat first by Mohammedan, Abahani could only manage 183 runs. Mohammedan chased it doen with 8 wickets and 37 balls left to play.

Shubhashis Roy had been bowling well from the start of the tournament and is playing as the only specialist seamer for his side. Today also, it was his express bowling, adding to some irritating bouncers, that has held back Abahani to go big. Habibur Rahman, Enamul Haque Jnr, Naeem Islam, Naeem Islam Jnr all chipped in with wickets.

Nazmul Hossain Shanto continues to be in great touch with the bat and Abahani’s middle order did put up some vital runs on board. Nazmul Hossain scored 42 before getting dismissed to an expansive shot. Bisla added 23 runs and Mosaddek also chipped in with some much needed 27 runs. The surprise set of runs were scored by Abul Hasan and Taskin Ahmed, who added 51 runs between them.

Abul Hasan scored 28 runs, while Taskin stayed not out at 38. Shubhashis Roy ended with excellent bowling figures of 10-2-34-3. Habibur Rahman and Naeem Islam Jnr bagged 2 wickets each, while Naeem Islam, Enamul Haque Jnr. and Ariful Haque took one wicket each in the process of bowling Abahani out for 183 runs only.

The chase was pretty smoothly operated by Mohammedan. Shykat Ali had to walk back after being hurt off a Taskin delivery, which caused quite a bit of unrest initially in the Abahani supporters’ segment. And then came the 78-run stand between Ezaz and Tharanga. Ezaz was a bit aerial at his approach, hitting 3-each sixes and fours in his 42.

Tharaga picked up another fifty, his fourth in 6 matches, and currently leads the run-scoring charts. Mushfiq wanted to have a quick finish to the match, speeding to 17, but was out to Taskin after that. No more wickets fell after this, and the 69-run stand from hereon took Mohammedan home. Tharanga stayed unbeaten at 77. Mohammedan won it by 8 wickets, and Abahani tasted a third consecutive defeat here at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium.

Shubhashis Roy was the Player of the Match for his splendid display of seam bowling and fantastic bowling figures
